Online Community Classes!

This November, we will be offering two online classes to enrich your Shakespearean experience through our partners at McNally Robinson Booksellers. These are for everyone and anyone with an interest on the Bard.  Shakespeare, The King’s Man: Reflections on the Bard’s Final Plays  A perfect companion to the upcoming Shakespeare in the Ruins (SIR) filmed production of Macbeth, this lecture is led by SIR-veteran, Kevin Klassen. We often refer to Shakespeare as an “Elizabethan” playwright, but nearly half of his creative output happened under Queen Elizabeth’s successor, the eccentric King James. Exploring the unique historical context Shakespeare was working in toward

In the Wings…

I’m not going to lie…it’s been a very challenging time since March, 2020. And being the the artistic leader of a theatre company during these many months of instability and nebulosity has been taxing on the creative soul. But oh, paradoxically, what a completely inspirational and engaging time this has been. I continue to be in awe of artists, and in particular theatre makers who – in an era of absolutely no live theatre – somehow have managed to create astonishing things, developing brilliant ideas into fruition in an ever-ending game of pivoting – exercising Jedi-like patience while the ground

Community Updates

EQUITY, DIVERSITY & INCLUSION : This work requires a great deal of thought and care. In early August 2020, SIR published a commitment to anti-racism in a message called A Shared Future. We continue to do a lot of excavating as the world grapples with the ongoing violence against Indigenous, Black and Peoples of Colour (IBPOC) and 2SLGBTQQAI+ communities. We have engaged in Reconciliation and anti-oppression training with our entire staff and Board, completing a robust 12-hour, 4-session process between October 10-31, 2020. The training was led by Seraph-Eden Boroditsky of Guided Conversations. This vital work, and these transformative conversations,

In the first episode, Jessica introduces us to the world of her new play, ‘The Dark Lady’, which explores the relationship between poetess Emilia Bassano and William Shakespeare. ‘The Dark Lady’ is currently being developed by SIR with support from Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, the Manitoba Association

World Theatre Day – Pandemic Again

Hello Friend, On March 27 we celebrated #WorldTheatreDay. Sadly, for a second time, we celebrated this special day while the vast majority of playhouses around the globe remain dark. And while the impact of the pandemic has been devastating for our sector, we have also witnessed the resilience, fierce intelligence and indomitable resourcefulness of theatre artists during this most unusual year. As we say farewell to the complicated month of March, we salute all theatre makers – in particular the freelance artists and technicians who are truly the ones responsible for creating the magic we share with our audiences. This
